Driver Cancellation and Reliability Policy
Plans change. Reliability still matters.
HomeTern is designed to protect students who depend on shared rides for airports, home, and nearby cities.
HomeTern is currently being developed. This page is a plain-language policy overview and some implementation details may be refined before launch.
Section 1
A canceled ride can affect more than a trip.
For many students, a HomeTern ride may be how they reach an airport, travel home for break, or get to another city. When a driver cancels, riders may have limited alternatives and could face higher last-minute travel costs.
Missed flights
Late cancellations can put airport connections at risk.
Expensive last-minute alternatives
Students may face higher costs when rebooking urgently.
Limited transportation options
Some routes have very few alternatives on short notice.
Section 2
Fair rules based on how close the trip is.
HomeTern's framework increases reliability consequences as departure gets closer, while still allowing room for legitimate emergencies and transparent review.
More than 14 days before departure
- The driver may cancel without a financial penalty.
- The cancellation may still appear in the driver's history.
7 to 14 days before departure
- The driver's reliability score may decrease.
- Riders are notified immediately so they can find another option.
72 hours to 7 days before departure
- A stronger reliability penalty may apply.
- The driver may be required to compensate affected riders.
Less than 72 hours before departure
- The driver may owe each affected rider compensation based on the seat price.
- The driver's reliability score decreases significantly.
- Additional posting restrictions may apply.
Less than 24 hours before departure
- This is treated as a serious last-minute cancellation.
- The strongest reliability penalty may apply.
- Rider compensation and a HomeTern cancellation fee may apply.
- The driver may temporarily lose the ability to post new rides.
Final fees, compensation percentages, and exceptions will be clearly shown before a driver posts a ride.
Section 3
Dependable drivers deserve to stand out.
Every driver builds a reliability record over time. Riders can use this information when deciding which ride to request.

Section 4
Drivers can show riders how firm their plans are.
Ride type labeling helps students understand confidence level before they request a seat.
Flexible Ride
- • Plans may still change.
- • More flexible cancellation terms.
- • Clearly labeled for riders.
- • Best for trips that are not fully confirmed.
Committed Ride
- • Stronger commitment to complete the trip.
- • Stricter cancellation consequences.
- • A special badge appears on the ride listing.
- • Gives riders more confidence for flights and important travel.
Section 5
When a driver cancels, riders are not left guessing.
HomeTern's rider flow is designed to provide immediate clarity and next steps.
1. Immediate notification
Riders are notified as soon as the cancellation occurs.
2. Alternative ride suggestions
HomeTern may show similar rides traveling in the same direction.
3. Compensation review
Eligible riders may receive compensation depending on how late the cancellation occurred.
4. Support access
Riders can contact HomeTern if the cancellation creates an urgent travel problem.
Section 6
Real emergencies are handled differently.
HomeTern understands that accidents, illness, severe weather, vehicle breakdowns, and family emergencies can happen.
Drivers may be asked to provide reasonable information when requesting an exception. HomeTern may waive or reduce penalties when the cancellation was caused by a legitimate emergency. HomeTern aims to avoid overly intrusive personal information requests.
Section 7
What this looks like in practice.
Example: A driver posts a ride from UIUC to O'Hare, three riders request seats, then the driver cancels two days before departure.
- Riders receive immediate notifications.
- The driver's reliability score may decrease.
- Alternative rides can be suggested.
- Eligible compensation is reviewed under policy rules.
Cancellation Policy
Please review our cancellation policy before requesting a ride.
- Riders may cancel their request within 24 hours of booking for a full refund.
- After the 24-hour cancellation window has passed, all payments are final and non-refundable.
- If a ride is canceled by the driver or cannot be completed due to circumstances outside the rider's control, HomeTern may issue a refund at its discretion.
- By requesting a ride, you acknowledge and agree to this cancellation policy.
HomeTern reserves the right to investigate fraudulent or abusive cancellation activity.
Section 8
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers for students and drivers.
Why does HomeTern have a driver cancellation policy?
Students may depend on these rides for flights, school breaks, and important travel. The policy encourages drivers to post only rides they genuinely expect to complete.
Can a driver cancel for free?
In some cases, yes, especially when cancellation happens far in advance. Policy effects are based on timing and context.
What happens if there is a real emergency?
HomeTern may reduce or waive penalties when the cancellation was caused by a legitimate emergency.
How is the reliability score calculated?
HomeTern may evaluate completion history, timing of cancellations, communication quality, and rider-reported reliability signals.
Can a reliability score improve?
Yes. Completing future rides successfully, communicating clearly, and arriving on time can help improve a driver's reliability record.
What is a committed ride?
A committed ride is intended for higher-confidence plans and may carry stricter cancellation consequences than flexible rides.
Will riders receive compensation?
Eligible riders may receive compensation depending on how late a cancellation occurs and the final approved policy rules.
Can a driver appeal a penalty?
Yes. Drivers may submit information if they believe a cancellation penalty was applied incorrectly or involved an emergency.
What happens if a rider cancels?
Rider cancellation handling is covered separately and may vary by trip type, timing, and platform rules at launch.
Are the rules different for airport rides?
Airport rides may be treated with stricter reliability expectations because of flight timing sensitivity.
Section 9
Trust makes shared travel possible.
HomeTern is building a student ride network where both drivers and riders understand what to expect.
This page is a plain-language overview. The final policy may be updated before launch and will be governed by the official HomeTern Terms of Service.
